Prof. Malek Bajbouj

Director, Clinic of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy; Professor of Psychiatry and Affective Neurosciences at the Charité (Germany)

Professor Dr Malek Bajbouj has been Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin since 2025, where he was appointed Einstein Professor. He has been Professor of Psychiatry and Affective Neurosciences at Charité since 2009. His academic trajectory includes roles at Witten-Herdecke University, Columbia University, and Charité, where he was appointed Junior Professor in 2004. From 2007 to 2014, he held a research professorship at the ‘Languages of Emotion’ cluster at Freie Universität Berlin. Alongside his clinical and research leadership roles, he serves as Director of International Affairs at Charité, heading the Global Mental Health Section and the Centre for Affective Neuroscience. His global health initiatives include launching the “Balsam Project” in 2013 to train Syrian and Jordanian mental health professionals to support refugee populations, and developing stepped care models for refugee mental health within the MEHIRA programme at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is also active in Ukraine through the SOLOMIYA mental health partnership programme.
