Bárbara Romero is a Salvadoran psychologist, lesbian, feminist, human rights defender, and co-founder of Global Independent Refugee Women Leaders (GIRWL). She works on women, inclusion, and LGBTIQA+ Rights and has worked on Gender-Based Violence prevention since 2006. Previously, Bárbara was the advisor of the presidency of El Salvador on sexual diversity and inclusion of women from indigenous roots and other marginalized sectors of society, which included the elderly, youth, LGBTIQA+, migrants and people with disabilities. She has worked in the development of public policies, and methodologies to create awareness and strategies for human rights knowledge and empowerment. Due to her work and human rights commitment, she had to flee from her home country in 2018 and has been recognized as a refugee in Europe since 2019. In Europe, she has continued her work on human rights, political participation and inclusion, access to services and mental health. Bárbara advocates for women, young girls, refugees, migrants and forcibly displaced women.
